How to apply for a director | Education 2022

Directing course and faculty teachers often discourage applicants during job interviews, talking about the horrors of 24-hour work with low wages and dubious prospects. Still, those who want to learn this trade don’t budge. Creative people are drawn to the opportunity to create an animated film, put on successful performances, and receive an Oscar for their achievements, or at least applause from the audience. Of course, this requires talent, but education is also necessary.

instructions:

Step 1

Prepare in advance for the film section. Write scripts, collect an amateur circle and stage skits and performances, and organize holidays. When you are in school, take responsibility for performing various activities. Collect different materials about your work, which will be helpful for admission. If you are interested in this activity, feel free to apply to the principal, but if exam preparation is a burden, think about whether you need this profession.

Step 2

You can learn to become a director at theater academies, cultural institutions, or cinematography. For example, in Moscow, several institutions offer training in this profession: VGIK, RATI (former GITIS), MGUKI, Academy of Natalia Nesterova, GITR (Institute of Television), and others. But the first two are rightly the flagships of the training of directors in our country, who impose increased requirements on candidates and conduct a meticulous selection. Today there is an opportunity to study not only in state universities but also in commercial ones. It may be easier to sign up for a fee at private institutions than at a famous theater institution, but at least the competition is very high, so you have to show your creativity and talent. Assess your abilities and choose a suitable institution for which you can enroll.

Step 3

Take courses at the chosen institute. For example, at the VGIK, in the direction department, career guidance courses take place twice a year for three months. Of course, this doesn’t give you the privilege or good-natured attitude of the teachers in the exams, but it does keep you informed.

Step 4

In almost all universities, tests start with a creative competition, which takes place in writing, and sometimes before the actual start of the exams. For example, in VGIK, you have to send workers with reflections on the subject of the film you want to shoot, observations, details, and episodes of it. You can also tell about yourself and attach drawings and photos. In the RATI, you must enclose a description of your control plans, explain the meaning of the selected products and tell about their implementation. This competition evaluates an original approach and creativity. Don’t write long essays so that teachers don’t have to read for a long time. Try to be honest and accurate and pick a topic that interests you. Write more straightforwardly, not literally, but visibly, effectively – what can be seen. You can also submit your stories or poems, but only if they are outstanding.

Step 5

During exams and interviews, be prepared to be asked about anything: about literature, an exhibition of paintings, about the war in Chechnya. Be honest – if you’ve never been to the Tretyakov Gallery, say so. Don’t use everyday expressions and “worn” phrases. In some cases, the examiners turn on music and ask you to dance, and they ask you to imagine that you are crazy, to tell a joke. Don’t worry if possible. Take a look. Do and say whatever comes to your mind, don’t pigeonhole yourself, and think if the committee will like it.

Step 6

Often exams include written work on a specific topic – this could be a quote from a work of art, a quatrain, or a non-literary topic. There are no restrictions or specific requirements – try to keep your writing engaging. Ensure the essay contains as little dialogue as possible, avoiding complex and complicated language.

Step 7

Another way to become a director is to study in specialized programs and courses offered by educational centers. In Moscow, for example, Higher Courses for Screenwriters and Directors produce solid specialists. The study is built on the principle of a creative workshop. The competition is not so great, but the admission rules are similar: you must submit a written work and pass an interview.
