How to write a summary for a scientific article | Education 2022

According to the rules that exist in modern science, any scientific article intended for publication must be accompanied by a short annotation. Usually, publisher editors don’t annotate, so this work falls on the authors themselves. If you plan to write and publish your articles regularly in scientific journals, you should also be able to annotate them.

How do you write an abstract for a scientific article?

Step 1

The first thing to remember: the abstract is a brief description of the printed work, not a retelling of it. The primary purpose of any annotation is to give the potential reader an idea of the article’s content. The summary should clearly explain what the article is about and how it might interest the reader.

Step 2

When writing a summary, don’t try to squeeze in a fragment of the main article text. Remember that the annotation should not be three-dimensional. Your job is to convey its essence succinctly and clearly. The optimal volume is one-third or one-half of an A4 sheet, typed in 12-point size. It is about 500-1000 printed characters with no space.

Step 3

The annotation is easiest to prepare with four universal questions: “Who?”, “What?”, “About what?”, “For whom?” In the annotation, you need to explain who the author is, what the level of his professional qualifications is, what the work is, what the internal content is, and for whom it may be interesting or valuable. In the summary of the scientific paper, describe the main idea outlined in this work.

Step 4

Please note that in the summary of the scientific article, you do not have to list the sources used in the work, describe the process of working on the paper, or retell the content of individual paragraphs. An abstract is simply a feature of an article that allows you to make a general impression of it. Accordingly, the summary should be objective and contain only facts.

Step 5

When writing your summary, pay particular attention to your writing style. Try to avoid lengthy and complex sentences. Your thoughts should be expressed as briefly and clearly as possible because this way of presenting makes it as easy as possible to understand what you are reading. Also, keep in mind that scientific papers are never written in the first person, so the annotation should also not contain expressions like “in this work of mine,” “I think,” “my scientific position,” etc. The same goes for cases in which you write an annotation on someone else’s articles. The text should be as impersonal and objective as possible.
